Bronwyn Barry and Ken Levenson, Directors of the North American Passive House Network, were pleased to announce Cover Architectural Collaborative and Lukas Armstrong as winners of the first ever NAPHN Design Award at the official NAPHN15 conference dinner on Oct. 1st., for the Bedford Road House project in Nelson, BC.

The project:
Bedford Road House is the first Passive House certified multi family dwelling in Canada. The triplex was designed, constructed and is now lived in by two brothers (designer and builder) and their extended family. An exercise in compact design, the project holds two 600 sqft suites and one 1200 sqft suite. The envelope is a triple layer stud frame packed with cellulose, and uses a standard 6 mil poly vapour barrier. Every effort was made to evolve current construction practices to meet the Passive House thresholds. This resulted in an air tightness rating of 0.2 ACH50 and an approach to construction that is easily understood by any licensed builder.

The roof profile is the perfect slope for PV and solar thermal panels, and the combined boiler/ DHW tank has a solar loop in it, making the building net-zero capable with a very small investment in equipment. Additional sustainable strategies include local materials, sustainably certified lumber, low toxicity and durable finishes and low flow water fixtures. The project is a functional and financial success with construction costs adhering to the 10% increase over standard construction projected by PHI.

What the Judges had to say:
The projects were judged on four criteria, design, performance, innovation and additional sustainable features. For the judges, the Bedford Road House demonstrated leadership, commitment to the Standard, adaptation to local context and innovation in typology and strategy.

The Judges:
Dieter Herz: Managing Director with Herz & Lang
Marcel Studer: Principal Econ Group Construction & Development Ltd.
Matthew Woodruff: Principal Local Practice Architecture Inc.

Thank you to everyone who entered their projects for consideration, and congratulations to Lukas and the Cover Architectural Collaborative!
